Afro Street Festival 2021: Spotlighting an Alternative Industry

By Christopher R. Ibanga

Festivals around the world strive to bring together the finest activities, performances, spectators and art forms, the AFRO STREET FESTIVAL is no exception to this

An emerging force in the Nigeria Creative Industry, the AFRO STREET FESTIVAL has fast become a project encapsulating the Niger Delta story and experience, pulling together a convergence of diverse narratives while speaking peace amidst uncertainty, encouraging unity in diversity, building community and creating alliances.

The impact of this annual street festival is felt far beyond the festival grounds. With an extensive drive for Community Building, It highlights emerging talents, providing a springboard to showcase their work while partnering with reputable companies and agencies to create a lasting project.

The previous editions have seen a growing audience of participants, featuring over 40 unique performances, art installations, and the epic fashion runway live on the streets of Port Harcourt.

As a marketplace for entrepreneurs, the festival houses multiple vendors.

After a one-year hiatus, largely due to the restriction of large gatherings to curb the spread of the deadly coronavirus which spelt the gap in the entertainment industry and the need for creatives to innovate and reach their audiences in new ways, the much-anticipated festival showcase is back with a third edition; AFRO STREET FESTIVAL 2021: Themed ‘TENACITY.’

The story behind the theme of this year's edition; TENACITY, is to highlight the struggles and challenges Creatives have faced in the past year and how they have been able to overcome them through strength, perseverance, determination and the never give up attitude. It is a story that involves everyone because we all have our tenacity story.

With a line up of various Pre-Events, The Afro Street Festival 2021 will bring together over 7,000 guests on a bigger street and showcase over 50 Vendors, Fashion Brands and a big roll call of performances. There is not a chance that you will want to miss this.

A renowned Festival for Creatives, The AFRO STREET FESTIVAL has duly positioned itself as a focal point for the art, fashion and entertainment industry in the Niger Delta, thanks to its awesome corporate partners, media houses, organizing team and a special thanks to the Convener of The CREATIVE HUB, Port Harcourt, IBINABO AMAKIRI, the Team-Lead of the Festival.

As part of the line up of events for the big showcase, there will be an official festival launch tagged the AFRICAN SOIRÉE holding on the 25th of September, 2021, a night of African Music, Dance and Performances to kick-start the festival proper, An OPEN MIC NIGHT to showcase talents, A week long ART EXHIBITION and a CSR Giveback Project to feed over 100 Street Kids.

Taking note of the impact The AFRO STREET FESTIVAL has on the socio-economic sector of Port Harcourt, its drive for inclusion and community building and the attention it pulls to the City as a tourist attraction attracting a diverse crowd from within and beyond, now is the time to fully support a project that showcases "Art on the streets, to get us off the Streets"
